Machine Building Week
Designing a 3-axis milling machine
We decided early in the week to build a milling machine that could increase our section's PCB throughput. And we sorta-kinda ended up with a decent finished product!
CAD party
I was part of the CAD team that used Jake's RTC files as a starting point and produced the CAD models to create our milling machine. We ended up with 2 designs. The first design featured a moving bed that was inspired by the ultimaker line of 3D printers. We soon realised that we really did not need that much space in order to build a PCB milling machine. So we got rid of the supports and ended up with the second design.
Assembly
Once all the parts were milled we started assembly. Meanwhile the electronics and software team were hard at work figuring out how to move all our parts and control the machine.
