3D Printing and Scanning
3D Printing Log
For 3d printing, I used the OpenCAD for the first time to create a model. I extended and modified one of the sample models. I found OpenCAD to be the best CAD program I've used yet, and I am excited to make more geometric prints in the future.
I used the 3d printer in my CSAIL lab space, which is an Ultimaker 3. The nozzles were clogged at first, but with How-To-Make peer Nolan Dickey, we were able to unclog the nozzle, and begin printing. We unclogged the nozzle by using the Ultimaker on-device menu system to manually heat up the printer head, and then push material through the nozzle for force out any of the other material.
3D Scanning Log
For 3d scanning, I used an iPhone application called "Turnio." I was interested in using tools that are readily available, and also interested in the computer vision of the 3d reconstruction. The app worked fairly well: I scanned my head, and the limiting factor was my patience for staying still and my friend's patience of taking many photos from lots of angles.
From a computer vision perspective, the scanning system worked well. From a visual perspective, there is a heavy "uncanny valley" effect, where my skin appears to be partially off of my skull in one area. This is only a minor CV issue, but it looks very disturbing visually.
